The problem with being an expert

The problem with being an expert is when others find out you don’t know much about the topic you are supposedly an expert on.

A gourmet chef sounds impressive until you are found to not be a good cook.

A programmer can be impressive until you are found to not be a good coder.

A consultant can be impressive until it’s discovered your not terribly knowledgeable in your area of expertise.
It’s fun being the expert…until it’s discovered you aren’t.

This happens more often when you have a small community and you know more than the others. They see you as an expert until a real expert exposes you as a wannabe.

If you want to be an expert, learn everything you can and then keep learning. Inevitably you will come across someone who knows more than you and they will know real quickly if you are an expert or not. The alternative is to simply stay in your community and keep on pretending.

Have a great day!
